Trzy nominacje badacza UŁ do „Archeologicznych Sensacji 2024”

Dr Dawid Kobiałka, an archaeologist from the University of Lodz, Assistant Professor at the Department of Historical Archaeology and Weapon Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy and History, has been nominated in as many as three categories of the "Archeologiczne Sensacje 2024" [Archaeological Sensations 2024] plebiscite. All nominations concern excavations conducted by Dr Kobiałka's international team in the so-called Valley of Death near Chojnice.

His project was submitted in the following categories: the most important archaeological discovery in Poland, the best archaeological photo and the most effectively popularised research. Voting in the plebiscite is open until 2 January 2025, 8:00 p.m., via the form on the website.

Dr Dawid Kobiałka's research project concerns mass executions, as a result of which 20 to 30 thousand people died in the first months of World War II in the pre-war Pomeranian Voivodeship. The victims, including priests, teachers, politicians, merchants, officials, as well as mentally ill people and representatives of the Jewish community, were buried in mass graves, which was intended to erase the traces of the crime. Dr Kobiałka's team works using an interdisciplinary approach combining the work of specialists in such fields as: archaeology, history, ethnography, physical anthropology, genetics, chemistry, soil and plant analysis and many others.

The "Archeologiczne Sensacje 2024" competition, organised by the popular science magazine "Archeologia Żywa" and its editor-in-chief, Dr Radosław Biel, evaluates unique discoveries, publications, projects and events related to the work of Polish archaeologists that took place in 2024.
